Couple to ride from Aparri to Koronadal City, Mindanao on Tandem Bike for good cause

"Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving." This line by Albert Einstein is what outdoor enthusiasts and long-time couple Lino and Ma. Veronica Basilio live by. But this time, they want to put more meaning to the word "moving" by doing more than what they normally do and move and inspire others to join in their advocacy.

The couple, now both 57 years old, will ride their Tandem Bicycle from the northernmost part of mainland Luzon in Aparri, Cagayan to Koronadal Cty, South Cotabato in Sox Region. That's a total of about 2,248-kilometer journey into long stretches of roads crossing different regions and cities before reaching their hometown.

Sir Lino and Maam Vernie from have been married for 33 years but have been active in the outdoors longer than that. They are both regulars in local and national mountain climbing, bicycling and marathon events. In 1999, Sir Lino, a fellow advocate in our Takladtamig Outreach Climbs, was among the 10 Filipinos who represented the Philippines for Marlboro Adventure Team in a 10-day adventure in Moab, Utah, USA. But, there's more to just adventuring, said Sir Lino during our talk.

This challenge is one of the most difficult they will ever attempt. They are now in Aparri to start the ride with only a pickup with a driver to back them up in case of emergencies. No medics. No support team. No sponsors.

For what?

"When I got home in Koronadal City one day, I saw the St. Anthony Parish/Cathedral was still under construction after more than two years", sir Lino said. The parish vicar came to him and presented the financial constraints causing the delay of the construction. Then he also discovered that an orphanage run by friends is needing support. Hence, this ride aiming to gain support and funds for two beneficiaries:

The first is Saint Lawrence Kalinga Foundation, Inc., an orphanage located at Brgy Conception in Koronadal. The orphanage has been caring for neglected, abandoned, surrendered and physically-abused children since 1995 and is being maintained through the efforts of private citizens, including the Basilios.

Second is for the St. Anthony Parish Church for additional funds to be able to complete the construction.

They are planning to ride at least 100 kilometers per day until they reach the destination in the south in approximately one month. Pedaling started today, April 18, 2015.

The  couple said they did researches on roads and towns and have practiced for several months to prepare. Maam Vernie said they are more than ready for the ride and hopes they make it and get the needed support for the beneficiaries.
They need more than your "likes, shares and cheers". For cash or check donations, please direct your help to the beneficiaries bank accounts:

  1. Thank you so much for this article! I am new to the biking community, and this post has given me much more consolidated insight than any other resource I've found. Thank's for sharing Couple to ride from Aparri.

  2. Both these persons are very inspiring. That ride is very long and I can clearly see in bus or car it's like 40 hours of driving. So in the bicycle it'll take a long time to reach their destiny. Anyway, just wanna know how is the update of that journey?

  3. Great !! Second is for the St. Anthony Parish Church for additional funds to be able to complete the construction.

  4. Im very proud of them as my kasimanwa..

  5. Really nice, people doing this for other people its what exactly we need in this world!
