Summer Climb: Lake Holon in Mt Parker

It's summertime and global warming is making us feel what it is expected to make us feel. You know what I mean. So, what is better than taking a dip into the cold while enjoying a refreshing natural view? I suggest you take an easy climb to one of the cleanest lakes in the Philippines, Lake Holon in the caldera of Mt Parker where water is cold and forests and its surrounding mountain peaks do not fail to amaze an adventurer by heart.

Fishing: More Fun in Lake Holon
Lake Holon, settled 1, 350 meters above sea level in the uplands of Barangay Salacafe, Tboli, South Cotabato province is one of my favorite outdoor destinations. Matter of fact, last weekend’s climb to the lake was already my 13th. Lucky 13, that is because I get to experience things that I missed during my previous climbs, like: getting thrown from an out-balanced skylab motorcycle; fishing in the lake, and; having long conversations with members of an indigenous family and learning about their lifestyle firsthand.

I invited my two younger brothers to join me for the climb to share that feeling of wonder and excitement in the outdoors. Obviously, they enjoyed, specially the part where we sat at the lake shore with their improvised fishing poles and gears for more than an hour. We didn’t catch any fish but the sitting there was well worth the experience.
Sunrise from any mountain is surreal
The hike to the peak and the lake isn’t just a walk in the park but compared to other popular mountains in Mindanao, the trek to the 304 hectare lake is considerably easy. But don’t be assured by the word “easy”. As mountaineers would say: “do not underestimate a mountain.”

The trek will lead you to close canopy secondary forests and mossy forests reminiscent of Jurassic Park movie scenes. The thickest of the forests are located from the peak down to its caldera.

At morning, the eastern peaks of will allow you a short but beautiful view of its surreal sunrise.

    1. very possible, sir. But it's via Brgy Tbolok if you're going to the summit, unlike the trail to the lake which can be reached via Brgy Salacafe.
Here's my blog about mt. parker summit.
